Margaret Arnott - Partner

Margaret Arnott qualified as a solicitor in 1987 and has 25 years’ experience as a trade mark, patent and design litigator. Her role includes advising in a full range of contentious work, including litigation in court and domain name UDRP proceedings.

Margaret’s background as a commercial solicitor is invaluable in her conduct of contentious intellectual property proceedings and in negotiating settlements. Margaret conducts litigation in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) and the Higher Courts. She has played an instrumental role in each of the firm’s cases and is an important part of our litigation success.

Margaret has litigated in numerous IP cases in both the High Court and the IPEC, and has been commended by Legal 500, 2016 for possessing the “rare qualities of reasonableness and level-headedness as a litigator”. She actively helps her clients achieve commercially beneficial settlements in the majority of those cases, including through various forms of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation.

According to the Legal 500, the “excellent Margaret Arnott” is “a delight to work with”, and she is “hardworking, sound, and has common sense and good presentational skills”.

 

Chris Hamer - Partner

Chris is a patent attorney with 20 years’ experience of contentious IP matters. He has worked on several High Court matters including QinetiQ v GEODynamics and Tech 21 v Design Blue Limited, where his expertise played a vital role in proceedings. He has also been involved in numerous contentious issues relating to ownership of IP rights, inventorship and licence/JV agreements.

He has been involved in various alternative dispute resolution proceedings, including arbitration and mediation. He was instrumental in ensuring a successful outcome.

Legal 500, 2016 notes that Chris “impresses with his scientific expertise, negotiating skills and willingness to go the extra mile whenever required”. Clients have also praised his “excellent service” and “quality”.

 

Ilya Kazi - Partner

Ilya has experience of handling litigation in the High Court of England & Wales and in the UK Intellectual Property Enterprise Court. He is qualified as a Higher Courts Litigator.

Ilya was part of the team which successfully defended British Gas against a £30million patent infringement claim from a non-practising entity in Meter-Tech LLC & Anor v British Gas Trading Ltd [2016] EWHC 2278, and achieved a substantial award of costs from the other side.

He also has experience of alternative dispute resolution, including negotiating several commercially advantageous settlements, particularly in cases where clients have been threatened by non-practising entities.

According to the Legal 500, 2016, Ilya is “great for recognising the wider application for inventions than the creators ever anticipated”.

 

Miranda Kent - Associate

Miranda has experience of handling litigation in the High Court of England & Wales and in the UK Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.

Miranda was part of the team which successfully defended British Gas against a £30million patent infringement claim from a non-practising entity in Meter-Tech LLC & Anor v British Gas Trading Ltd [2016] EWHC 2278. Miranda was responsible for the day-to-day management of the case, which included working with in-house commercial and technical teams and independent technical experts.

Legal 500, 2016 describes Miranda as having “a gift for project management in large-scale litigation'”.

 

Abigail Nicholls - Litigation Associate

Abigail is an associate in our Litigation team in London. She qualified as a solicitor in 2014 and completed her training contract at a firm specialising in franchise litigation. She later worked at an international firm in commercial litigation and dispute resolution.

Her experience includes High Court and County Court litigation, ranging from pre-action dispute resolution to multi-million pound disputes in the High Court. She also has significant experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation.

Her experience includes: enforcing post-termination provisions of franchise agreements relating to the use of trade marks and registered domain names, debt recovery, breach of contract claims, and construction disputes. Her experience spans all stages of litigation, including pre-action protocols, issuing proceedings and collating witness evidence.

Abigail also has experience of cross-border disputes, regularly instructing local experts in South America, Europe, the U.S. and Africa.

 

Monika Rai - Partner

Monika is a solicitor, and prior to joining the IP profession in the UK over a decade ago, qualified and practised as an Advocate in India.

She has been involved in pan European litigation strategies, and has experience of conducting hearings and litigation in India as well as in the UK Patents Court. Her litigation experience in the UK includes pre-action correspondence and providing litigation management in infringement actions before the UK Patents Court.

Monika has been actively involved in training newly qualified UK patent attorneys in litigation skills in her capacity as a Principal Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorney’s Litigation Skills Course.

 

Daniel Ramos - Litigation Assistant

Daniel is an assistant in our Litigation team in London. He has extensive experience of working on complex multi-jurisdictional commercial litigation, having worked for several years at a leading boutique disputes firm. Daniel also worked as a legal consultant in Brussels for a leading international trade and EU regulatory firm.

Daniel’s experience includes working on high-value banking litigation (one of which was featured on the Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases) against a leading financial services provider; advising a major oil company on litigation strategy concerning an USD 850 million investment in an oil field in Latin America; and acting for Unwired Planet Inc. in patent-related competition law proceedings valued in excess of £1bn.

Most recently, Daniel assisted in negotiating a settlement in high-value patent litigation proceedings before the High Court.

 

Laura West – Associate

Laura West is a Chartered Trade Mark and Design Attorney and holds a Higher Courts Litigation Certificate allowing her to handle litigation in the High Court of England & Wales.

Her experience includes Chelsea F.C. v Benetton Holdings Limited where she played an active role in the case management and preparation of the supporting evidence. Throughout this case, Laura was responsible for managing a set of over twenty co-pending proceedings at the UK Intellectual Property Office and European Union Intellectual Property Office.
